TellTaleHard are on the heavy side of progressive rock so you won't find any symphonies here, but what you do get is some high energy music which is on a similar style to Everon, (this is not surprising considering Oliver Philipps,Christian Moos and ERoc are involved), Tea in The Sahara and possibly the Dutch band Marathon, oh yes, you also get a touch of Metallica thrown in as well. The production is first rate and dynamic. Track 2 "Tip The Scale" is probably the most progressive song while track 4 "A Living Page Of Mystery" is quite heavy but emotional and has a stunning guitar solo. This could be the best song on this mini album. After saying that "Cynical Hope" is rather special too.

Telltalehard are a highly interesting acquaintance. On this 5-track demo/promo they offer an intelligent and innovative mix of various musical styles. To me, they come across as mixing melodic metal with prog metal or perhaps technical melodic metal is more correct, although their music is so much more than that. If you listen carefully, you'll find a broad variety of influences. You can hear traces of 80's melodic metal, prog metal, neo prog, AOR, flamenco, and symphonic. Besides the obvious fact that these guys are really competent musicians, they sure know how to write catchy, melodic, original and well crafted songs, which grow on you for each spin. The songs tend to have mixed parts of catchy guitar dominated verses as well as more acoustic and clean guitar-based verses, brilliantly intervened with odd rhythms and tempo changes and glittering solos with tons of melody. The vocal-lines and choruses are awesome and the band has a scent for creating various atmospheres. The vocalist is perhaps somewhere between mid and high-ranged. He has a smooth, pleasant voice, with little or no noticeable accent.
For a demo, the production is good and the songwriting and arrangements are top notch. There is no point in drawing comparisons as Telltalehard clearly have their own identity and expression, and besides, I could not find any comparisons, which really is a big plus. If you are a fan of melodic metal and prog metal you can safely buy this CD. All 5 songs are of top quality and I can see no reason not to check this band out. I hope to see this band getting signed soon as I feel they have a lot to offer. Their future is bright.

An excellent example of contemporary Neo-Prog-Metal. Unlike many bands of that style from Rhapsody and Stratovarius to Royal Hunt and Symphony X, TellTaleHard presents not some amorphous/non-inspired, strained/sugary melodic Metal, but very well constructed (composed, arranged and performed) true power Metal with strong structures and, at the same time, more or less satisfactory level of complexity. Each of the songs (there are 5 in all on "Spiral Stairs") contains a few diverse themes and arrangements, some excellent interplays between both guitarists and good guitar solos as well (no keyboards). While instrumental parts (oh, the rhythm section, too) are done well, vocal parts with English lyrics are also OK. Not so bright as all the four aforementioned bands, TellTaleHard guys however bring with their music a real energy together with obvious progressive tendencies.

Eine eigenständige und innovative Ausnahmeband mit berauschender Spielkunst, Spiellaune und dem perfekten Mittelmaß an Komplexität und Eingängigkeit. TELLTALHARD haben für mich, was ich bei SIEGES EVEN irgendwie bislang vermisse: den nötigen Funken Greifbarkeit. TELLTALEHARD haben das drauf, was QUEENSRYCHE mit "Hear in the new frontier" und ENCHANT mit "Break" nicht geschafft haben ... ein modernes höchstkomplexes Rockalbum, daß niemals dahinplätschert, dennoch gut abrockt und Faszination pur ausstrahlt ! Ein tolles Demo, das zwei bis drei Anläufe braucht, bis es endgültig zündet und das hoffentlich nicht mehr lange ein Demo ist ! 9 Punkte
Freakige Passagen, dezent verhangene Keyboards, Doublebassdrum, guter Gesang bis hin zu sanften Ruhepassagen ... eben ähnlich zu SIEGES EVEN wobei jedoch TELLTALEHARD auch mal den Knüppel aus Sack holen. Superklasse !
Tip The Scale erinnert vom Flair ein wenig an die Holländer SYMMETRY. Ein eher groovender Rocksong, mit für diese Art von bedächtigen Rock erfreulich durchdachten Gesangslinien und Wendungen.
Beacon Light zeigt, daß die Marburger progmetallisch so richtig Gas geben können. Ein staubig dreckiger Rocker mit tollen Gesangsphasen und - trotz der vielen Facetten - butterweichen Übergängen.
Einfühlsam schleicht sich A living Page of Mystory in die Gehörgänge. Beeindruckende Akustik-Gitarre, verhangen melodischer Gesang, eine druckvolle Bridge, rotzig progmetallische Züge und dann wieder ein so richtig dreckiger Abrockerteil mit taktvollem Guitarsolo.
Cynical Hope schließt nahtlos an alle bisherigen Songs an und hält problemlos das hohe Niveau.

So professionell und musikalisch einwandfrei wie Telltalehard findet man nur selten Bands. Was hier in einem Quintett progressiver Lieder geboten wird ist kaum noch zu verbessern: feines, erwachsenes Songwriting bestückt mit Details en masse, klare, kraftvolle und extrem variable Vocals und das Ganze abgerundet von einer Produktion die man eigentlich (und öfters nicht...) auf offiziellen Debüts vorfindet. Ehrlich; ich frage mich warum Songs wie "Beacon light * I'm no stranger" und "Cynical hope" denn auf einer selbstfinanzierter CD sind, während ich mich im Plattenladen Woche für Woche mit Rabattschrott herumplage. "Spiral stairs" bietet vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton hochkarätigen Progressive-Stoff der es mit Underground-Heroen wie Apocalypse (US) oder Divine Regale aufnehmen kann.
Besonders beeindruckend ist die Art und Weise in der man die einzelnen Teile zusammensetzt; trotz aller Komplexität der Songs sind sie so gut arrangiert dass keiner dem Frickel-Bazillus unterliegt. Stattdessen fliesst eine gewisse kompositorische Ruhe in die Musik, die man bei anderen Bands dieser Stilrichtung oft vergeblich sucht; ein Song ist hier ein Song und kein Sammelsurium an halbfertigen Ideen, unnötigen Intermezzi, Halsüberkopf-Breaks, Proberaum-Riffs und wirren Drum-Fills. Telltalehard (schon das intelligente Wortspiel im Bandnamen spricht für die Qualitäten dieser Gruppe) spielen ihre Songs mal lockerer, mal intensiver; bei aller Abwechslung verliert man nicht den roten Faden und lässt zudem seinen Metal nicht von irgendwelchen gerade angesagten Einflüssen unterschneien. Mit dem wunderschönen "A living Page of Mystory" (kein Schreibfehler) offeriert man sogar einen Mini-Klassiker des Genres - der Refrain dieses spannenden Metal-Abenteuers mit sämtlichen Zutaten (inklusive akustische Gitarren und ergreifende Vocals) hat mich umgehauen.
Bedenke: ohne querulante Bands wie Valley's Eve, Zero Hour, Symmetry, Payne's Gray, Ion Vein und - zugegeben - die Genre-Könige von Dream Theater würde es in der heutigen Monokultur noch erheblich mehr an Sauerstoff mangeln...

Der Opener "Spiral Stairs" startet auch so, die Gitarren dominieren das Geschehen von Anfang an, der Song wird einige Male durch anständige Breaks ein wenig abgebremst, um Sekunden später wieder eine volle Ladung Metal in den Raum zu werfen. Ganz gediegen beginnt "Tip the Scale", nicht zu soft, nicht zu heftig, gefällt sofort. Interessant auch die dritte Nummer, "The Beacon Light" gutes Zusammenspiel der beiden Gitarristen, doch auch Schlagzeug und Gesang überzeugen. Natürlich darf auch hier eine Ballade nicht fehlen, "A Living Page of Mystory" beginnt genau so, einige Richtungswechsel sind trotzdem angesagt, passt wie die Faust aufs Auge. Der längste Track des Silberlings "Cynial Hope" stellt für mich auch gleichzeitig den Höhepunkt des Albums dar, auf der ganzen Länge nicht ganz so kraftvoll wie die anderen Songs, aber mit guten Vocals wird der Song zum Hörvergnügen.
Fazit: Wirklich nicht übel, was da "TellTalehard" auf der CD gebannt haben, vor allen "Beacon Light", "A Living Page of Mystory" und "Cynial Hope" kommen prächtig rüber, schade das es (noch) nicht zu einem Longplayer gereicht hat...
